 Bruce Chalmer, Ph.D.
  • Licensed psychologist - Doctorate
  • Ph.D. from UVM, 1982
  • In private practice since 1995
  • Individual, couple and family therapy
  • Training, supervision and consultation

I offer therapy for individuals (adults and adolescents), couples, and families.  With younger children (around 12 or under, depending on the child), I generally work together with parents.

My style is active, collaborative and respectful.  One of the main influences on my work (and a major focus of my training) is narrative therapy, but my work also draws on ideas from cognitive behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.

One of the tools I use, especially in working with trauma and its effects, is EMDR.

I have experience working with people dealing with a wide variety of concerns, including anxiety, depression, spiritual crises, marital conflict, infidelity and trust issues, divorce, parenting issues, school and education-related issues, extended family conflict, coping with pain and chronic medical conditions, dealing with infirm parents, stepfamily issues, aftereffects of abuse and trauma, work and career issues, and many more.  I frequently consult (with your permission) with primary care physicians, psychiatrists or other specialists to coordinate care when medication or other treatments are indicated.

I am also very involved in music, as both a performer and a composer.  My work Berakhot: A Midrash Cantata  has been recorded by the Fyre and Lightning Consort, and has been released on CD by Multicultural Media.  I direct the synagogue choir at Temple Sinai in South Burlington.
